Hudu Buyer's Guide 2027: Fit, Deployment and Regional Checks

10 min read

Hudu is an IT documentation platform for MSPs and internal IT teams: client documentation, a password vault, assets, a knowledge base, processes, IP address management and rack layouts in one structured system. This Hudu buyer's guide covers licensing, the hosted or self-hosted choice and the regional checks for the GCC, EU, UK, US and Oceania. Stackingo is an authorised Hudu reseller and sells it at up to 20% off list, with a 5% minimum guaranteed; the minimum applies on any quantity. You pay per user, meaning the people who log in, never the clients who read their portal. Your quote arrives within 1 business day.

Hudu through Stackingo • Billing model: per user (active accounts that can log in); read-only client portal users are free and unlimited. • Discount: up to 20% off list, with a 5% minimum guaranteed, on Hudu and the Hudu Radar add-on. • Editions: one platform licence, run as Hudu Cloud (hosted) or Hudu Self-Hosted, plus the optional Hudu Radar network discovery add-on. • Deployment: hosted by Hudu, or self-hosted with Docker on your own server, in the cloud or on-premises. • Quote turnaround: 1 business day.

The full platform on a huducloud.com subdomain; Hudu runs updates and backups; optional weekly export to S3

Hudu Self-Hosted

Teams that must keep documentation and credentials in their own environment

The same features on your own Docker server and domain; only the active-user count is sent to Hudu; you choose the maintenance windows

Hudu Radar (add-on)

MSPs onboarding many client networks

Network discovery that turns scans into assets, IP address records and topology maps; sized by collector packages, one collector per client environment

Hudu Cloud and Hudu Self-Hosted are one licence with the same features, and every Hudu product carries the same discount pair through Stackingo. For list rates, see the full Hudu plan breakdown; for collector packages, see the Hudu Radar plan details.

How Hudu is licensed

Hudu sells one platform licence per user, and that licence includes every core feature. There are no plan tiers to compare, so the decisions are how many users, which billing term and whether you add Radar.

  • Who counts. A user is an active account that can log in: in practice your technicians, engineers and admins.

  • Client portal users are free. Read-only portal users, each with access to a single client portal, do not count towards the licence total, and Hudu sets no limit on them.

  • No minimums. Hudu has no user minimum, no set-up fee and no contract, so a one-technician MSP can start, and plans stop at the end of the billing period.

  • Monthly or annual. You can be billed monthly, or annually in advance at a lower rate.

  • Everything else is unlimited. Companies, assets and storage are unlimited, and the 60+ integrations, the REST API and webhooks come with the licence.

  • AI is included. Hudu includes its AI features, among them the Hudini assistant, with every plan.

  • Radar is the second unit. Automated network discovery is not in the per-user licence. Hudu Radar is sold in collector packages: Starter (5 collectors), Growth (25), Scale (150) and Enterprise (500), with custom packages above that.

  • Services are separate. Guided migrations, hosting transfers and custom scripting are Hudu professional services, quoted separately from the licence.

The practical rule: count the people who log in to work in Hudu, not the clients who read their portal, and count client networks separately if you want Radar.

Hosted and self-hosted share one licence and the same features, so the choice is about who runs the server and where it sits.

  • Hudu Cloud suits MSPs and IT teams that want Hudu to run updates and backups. Your instance lives on a huducloud.com subdomain, and an optional weekly export to S3 keeps your own copy of the data.

  • Hudu Self-Hosted suits security-conscious MSPs and internal IT teams that must keep credentials and documentation on their own server. Your team owns backups, patching and server security.

Choose before the trial: the 14-day trial works on either model and becomes your live instance, while moving between hosted and self-hosted later is a migration with a one-time fee.

Hudu Radar: the network discovery add-on

Hudu Radar is a desktop application that scans each client network from a collector device and turns what it finds into structured Hudu documentation: networks and IP address records, devices as assets with operating system, hardware and interface details, live topology maps, and vendor and serial details that become warranty expirations. You can edit results before they sync. An optional Radar Agent reaches devices a scan cannot; it runs on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 or later, with macOS and Linux support planned. Radar needs Hudu 2.39.4 or later and works with hosted and self-hosted Hudu. It is sized by client environments, not users, and carries the same pair: up to 20% off list, with a 5% minimum guaranteed.

Deployment, hosting and data residency

Hudu Cloud is a hosted service. Hudu runs it on hybrid DigitalOcean and AWS infrastructure, encrypts data with AES-256 and serves all traffic over HTTPS. Hudu does not publish the hosting region of its cloud on the pages we checked, so if residency matters, ask us which region applies before you sign.

Hudu Self-Hosted puts the region in your hands. The stack is fully dockerized, and Hudu recommends a cloud provider such as DigitalOcean or AWS; on-premises servers also work. The standard setup needs Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer, at least 4 GB of memory and 1 CPU, an SMTP server, a DNS A record, and ports 443 and 80 open for Let's Encrypt; Hudu also documents custom-certificate and internal setups. Hudu puts setup at about 30 minutes, and each update takes about 20 minutes offline, so back up first. Hudu supports only its recommended setup methods.

Both models carry the same controls: enforced single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, granular permissions, audit logs and IP-restricted API keys. Hudu lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27701, GDPR, HIPAA, PCI DSS and CMMC Level 1 among its compliance credentials.

Buying Hudu in the GCC

Hudu publishes no GCC hosting region. Buyers who need documentation and credentials to stay in-country run Hudu Self-Hosted on a server in their own country, in their own data centre or a local cloud region. For Hudu Cloud, ask us which hosting region applies.

Your quote shows VAT as a separate line for the buying entity's country. Hudu's PSA, RMM and Microsoft 365 integrations come with either hosting model.

Buying Hudu in the EU and UK

Hudu lists GDPR, ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 among its compliance credentials. It publishes no EU or UK hosting region for Hudu Cloud, so EU and UK buyers who need data kept in a specific country self-host there, or ask us which region the hosted service uses. Ask us for Hudu's data processing terms with your quote. Standard VAT rates differ by member state, from 17% to 27% at the time of writing; UK VAT is 20%. Your quote shows tax as a separate line.

Buying Hudu in the US

Hudu lists HIPAA, PCI DSS, CMMC Level 1 and SOC 2 Type II among its compliance credentials, which matters for MSPs serving regulated US clients. Hudu Cloud's hosting region is not published, so ask us; self-hosting puts it wherever your server runs. There is no federal VAT; sales tax on software depends on the state of the buying entity, and your quote shows it separately where it applies.

Buying Hudu in Australia and New Zealand

Hudu publishes no Australian or New Zealand hosting region. If your policy requires in-country hosting, run Hudu Self-Hosted on a server in Australia or New Zealand; otherwise ask us which region Hudu Cloud uses. GST is 10% in Australia and 15% in New Zealand.

Hudu evaluation checklist

  1. Count the technicians, engineers and admins who log in; that is your user number.

  2. List the clients who only need read-only portal access; they need no licence.

  3. Decide hosted or self-hosted before the trial starts.

  4. If you self-host, size the server (Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, 4 GB memory, 1 CPU) and agree who patches and backs it up.

  5. If you stay hosted and residency matters, ask us which hosting region applies.

  6. Map the PSA, RMM and Microsoft 365 integrations you will sync from.

  7. Decide whether you need Radar, and count client environments for collectors.

  8. Plan the import of existing documentation, passwords and assets, and whether Hudu's professional services should run it.

  9. Run the 14-day trial on real client data; it becomes your live instance.

  10. Agree the billing term, renewal date and discount pair in writing.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Licensing your clients. Read-only portal users are free and unlimited. Licence the people who log in to work.

  2. Choosing hosting after the trial. The trial becomes your live instance, and moving between hosted and self-hosted later is a migration with a one-time fee.

  3. Assuming discovery is included. Automated network discovery is Hudu Radar, an add-on sized by collector packages, not part of the per-user licence.

  4. Underestimating self-hosted upkeep. Each update takes about 20 minutes offline, and backups, patching and server security are your team's job.

  5. Expecting the Radar Agent on every operating system. The agent runs on Windows today; macOS and Linux support is planned, not shipped.

Hudu buyer's guide: frequently asked questions

Is Hudu licensed per user or per technician? Per user. A user is an active account that can log in, which in practice means your technicians, engineers and admins. Read-only client portal users are free and unlimited, and there is no user minimum, so the licence count follows the team that works in Hudu.

Do clients need a Hudu licence to use the portal? No. Read-only portal users, each with access to a single client portal, do not count towards the licence total, and Hudu sets no limit on them. Only accounts that log in to work in Hudu need a licence.

Is self-hosted Hudu the same as Hudu Cloud? Yes, on features and licence. Both run the same platform under one per-user licence, and Radar works with both. The difference is operations: on Hudu Cloud, Hudu runs updates and backups; when you self-host, your team runs the server and only the active-user count is sent to Hudu.

Can Hudu keep data in the UAE or Saudi Arabia? Yes, if you self-host. Hudu publishes no GCC region for Hudu Cloud, but Hudu Self-Hosted runs on any server that meets its requirements, so you can place it in your own UAE or Saudi data centre or a local cloud region. For Hudu Cloud, ask us which region applies.

Is Hudu Radar included in the Hudu licence? No. Radar is an add-on sized by collector packages, one collector per client environment, from 5 collectors on Starter to 500 on Enterprise, with custom packages above that. It needs Hudu 2.39.4 or later and works with hosted and self-hosted Hudu.

What discount does Stackingo give on Hudu? Up to 20% off list, with a 5% minimum guaranteed, on Hudu and Hudu Radar. The minimum applies on any quantity; where you land depends on user count, Radar package, billing term and market. Send us your numbers and you will have an exact quote within 1 business day.
